POSITION SUMMARY
The Facilities/Maintenance Assistant will support the Director of Facilities in ensuring that the church property remains safe, functional, and welcoming for all who use it. This position provides meaningful, hands-on experience in facility operations, maintenance, and safety compliance, with mentorship and skill-building at its core. Working under the supervision of the Director of Facilities, the student will receive weekly guidance, job shadowing opportunities, and practical training to help develop transferable skills in organization, teamwork, and communication. The position offers a balance of physical, technical, and problem-solving tasks designed to prepare the student for future employment in trades, property management, or related fields.

Experience in repairs and maintenance tasks
Experience in cleaning or janitorial work
Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs
Positive attitude and approachable demeanor, contributing to a welcoming and safe atmosphere for campers and visitors
A current vulnerable sector police background check
WHMIS Certification or willingness to obtain one
Weekend availability
ACCOUNTABILITY
The Facilities/Maintenance Assistant will be directly accountable to the Director of Facilities, who will provide regular mentorship, supervision, and feedback as part of the youth’s professional development during the program.
MAIN DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Working in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Director of Facilities, this position is for 40 hours per week and will include:
Building Repairs and Maintenance:
Assist with minor repairs to plumbing fixtures, lighting, walls, doors, and equipment under supervision.
Conduct visual inspections of the facility and report any maintenance concerns or safety hazards.
Support preventative maintenance activities such as tightening hardware, changing filters, and testing systems.
Participate in basic landscaping and exterior upkeep including weeding, trimming, and debris removal.
Contribute to sustainability initiatives by helping implement recycling improvements and identifying energy-saving opportunities within the facility.
Cleaning and Janitorial Assistance:
Work alongside the caretaker to clean and prepare spaces for summer camps, rentals, and community events.
Maintain common areas, restrooms, and high-traffic spaces to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
Restock supplies and track inventory needs for cleaning and maintenance materials.
Learn and apply safe cleaning practices and WHMIS guidelines.
Safety System Maintenance:
Assist with routine checks of fire safety systems, including extinguishers, alarms, and emergency lighting.
Help maintain proper documentation related to safety inspections and building compliance.
Identify and report potential hazards immediately to ensure a safe environment for staff, visitors, and children.
Participate in workplace safety discussions and apply safe lifting, tool handling, and chemical use procedures.
General Facility Support:
Assist with room setups and tear-downs for programs, church services, and rental groups.
Move and organize furniture, equipment, and materials as directed.
Provide courteous on-site support to staff, volunteers, and community members during events.
Gain experience in customer service, time management, and prioritization.
TERMS
40 hours per week, duration of 16 weeks*. Paid hourly wage.
SALARY RANGE: $20/hour
