What is membership?

The act of becoming a member is a public affirmation of a commitment to Christ as an active and contributing member of Bethany Church.

Why membership?

  1. A Biblical reason – Christ is committed to the church.
  2. A cultural reason – It is an antidote to our society. Membership “swims” against the current of our culture’s “consumer religion.”
  3. A practical reason – It defines who can be counted on.
  4. A personal reason – It produces spiritual growth as we become accountable to each other.

What is expected of me as a member?

At Bethany, we expect our members to do what the Bible expects every Christian to do. These responsibilities are spelled out in the Membership Covenant.

The Membership Covenant

Having received Christ as my Lord and Saviour and being baptized, and being in agreement with Bethany’s statements, philosophy and structure, I now feel led by the Holy Spirit to unite with the Bethany Church family. In doing so, I commit myself to God and to the other members to do the following:

1. I will protect the unity of my church

  1. by acting in love toward other members

  2. by refusing to gossip

  3. by following the leaders

2. I will share the responsibility of my church

  1. by praying for its growth

  2. by inviting the ‘unchurched’ to attend

  3. by warmly welcoming those who visit

3. I will serve the ministry of my church

  1. by discovering my gifts and talents

  2. by being equipped to serve by my pastors

  3. by developing a servant’s heart

4. I will support the testimony of my church

  1. by attending faithfully

  2. by living a Godly life

  3. by giving regularly

How do I go about becoming a member?

  1. Complete a fun and informative course called Bethany Basics.

  2. Meet informally with one or two of our friendly deacons.

  3. Publicly affirm your commitment by standing up with the other new members in one of our weekend services to be welcomed, introduced and read the Member’s Covenant together.
