What is baptism?

Baptism is a public affirmation that you are putting your trust in Christ as your Saviour and committing to follow Him the rest of your life. The act of baptism is symbolic of Christ’s death and resurrection and your new life as a Christian.

How do we do baptism at Bethany?

Different churches baptize in different ways and at different stages in life. At Bethany, we baptize by immersion into the water. This is a personal decision made by someone who is old enough to fully comprehend the life-long decision they are making.

Why immersion?

  • The word “baptize” means to “dip under water.”

  • Jesus was baptized this way.

  • In the Bible every baptism was by immersion.

  • It best symbolizes a burial and resurrection.

Why should I be baptized?

  • To follow the example set by Jesus – Jesus Himself was baptized.

  • Because Christ commanded it – Jesus said, “Go then, to all people everywhere and make them my disciples, baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and then teach them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

  • It demonstrates that I really am a believer – you don’t have to have “it all together” to be baptized, (none of us do!), you simply need to believe.

How do I go about getting baptized at Bethany?

  • Baptism weekends happen twice a year (January and June) during the weekend services. To celebrate this joyful occasion with you, each baptism candidate will share their testimony with the congregation (invite your family and friends!) and following will be baptized by one of our pastors (or someone of your choosing who has been instrumental in your spiritual journey).

  • There are several baptism classes for you to attend led by Pastor Larry in which you will learn what baptism is, why we do it, and how to write a testimony. You can simply check out the classes even if you’re not sure when you plan to get baptized.
